Brown University shooting latest: 'Person of interest' in custody after gunman kills two at US university

Police have not said if the person they've arrested is connected to the university. 

But there is another detail to bring you now.

According to an FBI agent, the arrest happened at a Hampton Inn hotel in Coventry, which is about 20 miles from Providence.

All remaining undergraduate, graduate and medical classes, exams, papers and projects for the autumn term will not take place as scheduled.

That's according to Brown University provost Francis Doyle.

"This choice was made out of our profound concern for all students, faculty and staff on our campus," Doyle said. 

"In the immediate aftermath of these devastating events, we recognise that learning and assessment are significantly hindered in the short term and that many students and others will wish to depart campus."

Doyle said students are free to leave campus if they are able, but students who remain will have access to on-campus services and support.

As we've reported, a person of interest has been detained in connection with the Brown University shooting.

Oscar Perez, the chief of police in Providence, has said the person was taken into custody early this morning (US time) and officials are not currently looking for anyone else.

He said the person detained was in their thirties.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said seven individuals who were injured at Brown remain in stable condition, while one of them is in critical but stable condition, and another has been discharged.

"We have trained for this moment," said a visibly emotional Smiley. 

"But this is not something that any community should have to train for."

While the shelter-in-place order has been lifted, access to parts of the Brown University campus is still restricted.

Police are still maintaining a cordon around Minden Hall and nearby flats, said Brown, which has hundreds of buildings, including lecture halls, laboratories and dorms.

The university added police officers remain in areas still considered an active crime scene.

Following up on the post below this one, officials have now confirmed the report they have a "person of interest" in custody.

Police in Providence have also said the shelter-in-place order has been lifted, as we reported little more than an hour ago.

Providence Police say they have a person of interest in custody, according to a local affiliate of Paste BN' sister outlet NBC News.

More than 400 law enforcement officers were deployed on Saturday as authorities searched for the suspect in the Rhode Island shooting.

Brown University say that police have advised them that the shelter in place order has been ended for the whole campus.

Trump has described the shooting in Providence as "terrible" and said he is being briefed on the situation.

Speaking to reporters at the White House late last night, the US president said: "All we can do right now is pray for the victims and for those that were very badly hurt." 

Compared to many countries, mass shootings in schools, workplaces, and places of worship are more common in the US, which has some of the most permissive gun laws in the developed world.
