Ukraine replaces Soviet-era emblem on Motherland statue as country seeks to reclaim identity amid Russia's ongoing invasion

Workers have begun to install the country's coat of arms, permanently replacing the Soviet hammer-and-sickle, on the Motherland monument in Kyiv. The move is part of a wider shift to reclaim Ukraine’s cultural identity from the Communist past amid Russia’s ongoing invasion.

The work is scheduled to be completed in time for Ukraine's Independence Day on 24 August.
