Aeolus: Why is the European Space Agency trying a landmark re-entry attempt for satellite falling to Earth?

The European Space Agency has said the Aeolus satellite will return to Earth during a first-of-its-kind assisted re-entry mission. It begins on 24 July, when an initial set of manoeuvres will bring it from an altitude of 174 miles (280km) to 155 miles (250km).
