Trump accuses Democrats of 'installing a communist' - and says he won't attend G20 in South Africa

Turning to Zohran Mamdani becoming the New York mayor-elect, Donald Trump accuses the Democrats of "installing a communist as a mayor".

Boos ring out in the audience as Trump mentions Mamdani's name.

"We skipped socialists and we put in a communist instead," he says.

Trump claims "opponents are hellbent on turning America into communist Cuba and socialist Venezuela".

In his wide-ranging speech, the US president then says he won't be going to the upcoming G20 meeting in South Africa.

He adds that he believes South Africa shouldn't be in the G20.

'Reopen government immediately', Trump tells Democrats

Donald Trump has called on Democrats in Congress to "reopen government immediately".

Today, the current US government shutdown became the longest in history.

He said Democrats have voted many times before for government funding bills, so questions why his political opponents have blocked the federal budget this time.

Democrats say it's because the Trump administration wants to cut healthcare support for millions of Americans.

'Communism' v 'common sense'

"If you want to see what Congressional Democrats wish to do to America, just look at the results yesterday in New York," Trump says.

"I hope it works out for New York, I love New York," the president - who is from the city - adds, after Zohran Mamdani's victory in the city's mayoral race last night.

Trump continues by saying the choice for the US is clear after yesterday's elections - and it's between "communism" and "common sense".

He claims his opponents offer an "economic nightmare", while he is delivering an "economic miracle".

"They put America, we put America first.

"As long as I'm in the White House, the United States is not going communist in any way, shape or form."

Trump: 'Day by day we're going to make America affordable again'

Back in Miami, Donald Trump is repeating some of his usual talking points about Joe Biden's presidency, accusing his Democrat predecessor of presiding over a bad economy with expensive prices for consumers.

"Rapid inflation, that's what Biden gave us," he says.

The president suggests he expects prices to surge in New York, following Zohran Mamdani's mayoral win there.

"I hope it doesn't happen but you're going to see it in New York, by the way," Trump says.

He says the price of eggs is down 85% since March - after ranting about the "fake news" media blaming him for the price of eggs just three days into his presidency.

"Day by day we're going to make America affordable again," he adds.

Trump attempts to tie Mamdani's win with the current US government shutdown - accusing Democrats in Congress of "holding America hostage".

In pictures: Protests in Washington marking year since Trump's election win

As Donald Trump is speaking to business leaders in Miami, protesters have gathered in Washington to demonstrate against the US president.

It comes a year after Trump beat Kamala Harris to win the US election.

Trump claims his time in office has been 'the best' of any president - one year on from election victory

After walking on stage to the song God Bless the USA, Donald Trump is speaking in Miami one year on from his election victory over Kamala Harris.

"Wow, what a nice group," he says to the business leaders in attendance, calling them "true American patriots".

Trump says last year was "the single, most consequential election victory in American history", adding "we've done a lot".

"We won a tremendous election, we won all seven swing states, we won the great state of Florida by the way," he adds.

"We won the popular vote for the first time of any Republican in many decades, we won the electoral college, and we won 86% of the counties in America, that's a big one."

Trump says his time in office has been "the best nine months of any president".

"One year ago, we were a dead country," he says.

"Now we're a country that's considered the hottest country anywhere in the world."

He goes on to tell the business leaders gathered in Miami that the US has the "strongest economy, strongest borders, the strongest military, the strongest friendships and the strongest spirit of any nation anywhere".

Inside the arena where there is broad support for Trump

By Mark Stone, US correspondent

I'm inside the Kaseya Centre in central Miami as we await a speech by President Trump.

He has chosen to mark the anniversary of his election and return to the White House by speaking to business leaders at the America Business Forum.

It's notable that he has chosen this setting and not a return to the grass roots of supporters who propelled him back to the White House.

In this arena there is broad support for the president. With the stock markets performing well, people here are happy. It's a safe space for the President.

But beyond here, it's clear from my travels around America - in Pennsylvania and Virginia over the last few days - that ordinary Americans are still really struggling with the cost of living.

An Associated Press survey this week of more than 17,000 voters in New Jersey, Virginia, California and New York City where elections have been held suggested the number one issue for the public was continuing higher prices and fewer job opportunities.

President Trump promised to tackle these issues but for now, on this, he has failed.

The US president was due to start at 6pm UK time, but as is often the case, he appears to be running late.

Shutdown caused 'quite a turnout' in Virginia, Republican governor admits

Over to Virginia now, where Democrat Abigail Spanberger will be elected as the state's first female governor.

While congratulating Spanberger, current governor Glenn Youngkin, a Republican, has said the US government shutdown caused "quite a turnout".

He also described the shutdown as a "big, big challenge" for federal workers.

Speaking at a breakfast for Republican senators earlier, Trump said the elections were "very democratic" and weren't "good for Republicans".

New York mayor-elect says he's spent 'many hours' watching Sky

Zohran Mamdani's news conference has now wrapped up, but let's take you back to the moment he was asked a question by our US correspondent James Matthews.

"I've spent many days in my youth watching the transfer window close, the final hours on Paste BN," Arsenal fan Mamdani jokes, referring to Sky Sports News coverage, when he hears who Matthews works for.

"It's a pleasure to have you here," he tells Matthews.

Asked about his message to fellow Democratic Party members and supporters, Mamdani chooses to respond with a message for Donald Trump instead - see our post at 16.33 for what he said.
