Surfers ride Severn Bore tidal surge in Gloucestershire

Surfers have ridden the first "five star" Severn Bore of the year.
The large tidal surge, one of Britain's most spectacular water-based phenomena, swept through the Severn Estuary on Tuesday.
Dozens of surfers and paddleboarders attempted to ride the wave, while hundreds of spectators lined riverbanks and bridges to catch a glimpse of it.

The Bore was visible as it surged up between Newham-on-Severn and Over in Gloucestershire.
It was thought to be one of the biggest "five star" Bores in recent years.

The Severn Estuary receives the second highest tide anywhere in the world. The difference between the lowest and highest tide can be as much as 14.5m (47ft) in a single day.
The high or spring tides occur on several days in each lunar cycle throughout the spring and autumn.
