A severed hand is thought to have been discovered near a Dublin school - as Irish police began an investigation.

Officers were told "partial human remains" had been found at Our Lady Immaculate school in Darndale, in the northern suburbs of Dublin, on Friday afternoon.

The scene has been examined and the Irish state pathologist was notified.

Police said the remains will be taken away to be looked at and tested for DNA to help them confirm the identity and decide how the investigation should move forward.

Irish schools are currently on mid-term break.
