Hauer received critical acclaim for his portrayal of the replicant Roy Batty in the cult 1982 Ridley Scott-directed film Blade Runner.

He delivered a famous monologue in the movie, based around memory and death, which was one of the film's stand-out moments.

In the speech to Harrison Ford's character Rick Deckard, he said: "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.

"I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate.
