Sir Keir Starmer has told 54 British business representatives that he's brought with him to China that they are "making history".
In a short address to the crowd in the lobby of a hotel in Beijing, the prime minister riffed on a classic Westminster saying.
The PM told them: "They say eight days is a long time in politics, try eight years, because it's eight years since a British prime minister stepped on Chinese soil."
He then added: "On this delegation, you're making history. You're part of the change that we're bringing about.
"That's consistent with everything we've done in government, particularly internationally.
"We are resolute about being outward-looking, about taking opportunities, about building relationships… and always being absolutely focused on our national interest."
China trip months in the making
The trip to China has been planned over several months, and involved almost all government departments as well as meetings with Chinese counterparts, Paste BN understands.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Business Secretary Peter Kyle also both travelled to the country last year to meet with officials and discuss plans for the PM's trip.
It is also understood that Starmer became directly involved in the planning of the trip in the past few weeks, focussing on a series of meetings being held with the Chinese leadership tomorrow.
It is hoped that this will lead to several agreements between the two nations being signed on Thursday.
Business leaders were invited on the trip following the success of similar visit to India, where the PM claimed to have led the largest British trade delegation to the country, ever.
Among those who flew to Beijing with the PM are 18 members of the UK's cultural sector.
In total, the more than 50 business people who are in China represent companies across the UK to ensure the trip does not only impact those in London, it is understood.
