A police station was closed and cordoned off after a suspected Second World War hand grenade was handed in at the front desk.

Malinsgate police station in Telford, Shropshire, and the road outside was closed on Tuesday afternoon, with a 50-metre cordon in place around the building.

Officers advised the public to avoid the area.

West Mercia Police said the station was evacuated as a precaution after the device was handed in.

The force later confirmed the grenade was no longer active and posed no risk to the public.

In an update on Tuesday evening, police said: "Further to our post earlier this afternoon, Malinsgate police station has now re-opened and the cordon has been removed.

"Experts from Explosive Ordnance assessed the grenade and found it was decommissioned and therefore safe.

"Thank you for your patience."
