Shooting stars lit up the night sky as the annual Perseid meteor shower was seen across the world.

Up to 100 meteors can be seen an hour as debris from the 109P/Swift-Tuttle comet burns up as it hits the Earth's atmosphere.

This creates bright flashes, known as shooting stars, which can be seen with the naked eye.

The meteor shower takes place at a similar time in July and August each year, and this time around it peaked between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Here we take a look at some of the best images from around the world.
