A 23-year-old man will go on trial later this year charged with the murder of a 'Good Samaritan' who died after being hit by a car as he helped a stranger.

Hassan Jhangur, from Sheffield, appeared at Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday morning charged with the murder of Chris Marriott, 46, and five counts of attempted murder.

Mr Marriott, a father-of-two, died after he stopped to help a woman who was unconscious in the street in the Burngreave area of the city on 27 December.

A car ploughed into the crowd, leaving Mr Marriott for dead and a number of others injured.

The attempted murder charges are in relation to Hasan Khan, Ambreen Jhangur, Nafeesa Jhangur, Riasat Khan and Alison Norris - a midwife who also tried to assist the woman at the scene.

Judge Graham Reeds KC remanded Jhangur into custody until a plea and case management hearing on 25 March.

His trial will begin on 15 July, he added, and is due to last around four weeks.

Jhangur appeared by video link and spoke only to confirm his name and that he understood the charges against him.

He did not enter a plea but his barrister Richard Davies indicated he would plead not guilty.

A GoFundMe page created for Mr Marriott's family had already raised over £40,000 by Tuesday morning.

Police described the charity IT manager as a 'Good Samaritan' and said he was out for a post-Christmas walk with his wife and two young sons when he was hit by the car at around 2pm last Wednesday.

He was heavily involved in Sheffield's City Church, the Jubilee Food Bank, Voluntary Action Sheffield, and served as a trustee for Manor and Castle After School and Kids Klubs.

One woman is still in hospital following the car crash, police added.
