Light aircraft 'crash lands' on beach in Porthcawl

The engine started "spluttering" before the aircraft "crash landed", according to witnesses. One person was taken to hospital for further treatment.

A light aircraft has come down on a beach near Bridgend.

Pictures from the scene show the aircraft along the shore near Porthcawl pavilion in Wales.

According to eyewitness reports, the engine started "spluttering" before the craft "crash landed".

The alarm was raised at around 9.20am this morning and the pilot was seen by paramedics following the incident.

The Welsh Ambulance Service confirmed that one person was taken to hospital for further treatment.

Another witness said the pilot was being attended to by members of the public "but was walking".

An RNLI craft was seen attending the incident, with lifeboats from Porthcawl and Port Talbot also sent out.

The emergency services response was coordinated by the coastguard, they confirmed.

A person made their way "out of the plane and onto dry land", a spokesperson said.

"The coastguard search and rescue helicopter from St Athan was also alerted, as well as South Wales Police and the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service," the coastguard spokesperson added.

RNLI lifeboats were involved to ensure the craft was secure and would not "become a danger to navigation".

"We are trained to deal with every eventuality, but were incredibly relieved to arrive on scene to find the pilot was able to be safely recovered.

"This was a real multi-agency effort between the fire service, the coastguard and the RNLI."
