Jeremy Corbyn announces Labour frontbench appointments

The appointments include some who had resigned positions in the shadow cabinet last year and a former minister under Tony Blair.

Jeremy Corbyn has announced 20 appointments to his shadow cabinet, including some who had resigned his team last year.

Among noteworthy appointments is Gloria de Piero, who told the Labour leader last year that she was quitting because she did not believe he could deliver victory.

The Ashfield MP becomes shadow justice minister.

Great Grimsby's Melanie Onn becomes a housing spokeswoman as she returns to the frontbench after joining the mass resignation of shadow ministers in the wake of the EU referendum in June 2016.

Three MPs elected to the Commons for the first time at the General Election on 8 June were also among the appointments.

Corbyn: 'Tories are in retreat'

Mr Corbyn said the appointments filled the Labour frontbench with a "wealth of talent" and "are further evidence that Labour is not just the opposition - we are the government in waiting".

Tony Lloyd, who was a minister under Tony Blair and chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party before quitting Parliament in 2012 to run for Manchester Police and Crime Commissioner, was also appointed.

Mr Lloyd, who is now MP for Rochdale, takes up a position in housing.

Former Coronation Street actress Tracy Brabin, who won Batley & Spen in the by-election forced by Jo Cox's murder and retained it at the snap general election, takes up a post in the education team.
