An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a stabbing in Leicester led to the death of another man in his 20s.

Police are appealing for more information to assist their murder investigation, calling on witnesses and members of the public with CCTV and dash cam footage to come forward. 

The stabbing of the De Montfort University student, in his 20s, occurred after an altercation between two men on the corner of Oxford Street and Bonners Lane on Tuesday at 5pm.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

Young man's life 'unnecessarily cut short', police commissioner says

Leicestershire police and crime commissioner Rupert Matthews has described the death of a man in his 20s in a stabbing as a "tragedy".

“My thoughts are with all those affected by this horrific, and shocking, incident," he said. 

“A young man’s life has been unnecessarily cut short, and that is a tragedy.

“I know that the police are working tirelessly to bring the person, or persons, responsible to justice.

“I have been kept fully briefed by the Chief Constable, and I am aware that an 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.

“In addition, local officers will be in the area over the coming days carrying out reassurance patrols.

“I urge anyone with information that may help the enquiry to come forward, and of course, they can speak to local officers about any concerns they may have.”

Where the stabbing took place

Here's a map showing where in the Leicester city centre the incident happened.

The man who was stabbed was taken to the nearby Leicester Royal Infirmary, but despite the efforts of health workers he could not be saved. 

Leicestershire Police said two men were involved in an altercation on the corner of Oxford Street and Bonners Lane.

Investigators are still piecing together what happened.

Police appeal for CCTV and dash cam footage after stabbing at 'busy' time

Detective Inspector Lorna Granville said the fatal stabbing unfolded at a busy time with many motorists and passers-by witnessing part of the incident. 

She urged anyone who stopped to help the man after he was stabbed to get in touch with police.

"We know a lot of people came to the aid of the victim before emergency services arrived and we want to thank them for their help," she said. 

"If you were one of these people and you haven't yet spoken to police, please make contact with us.

"The incident happened at 5pm so we know the area was also busy with motorists driving along Oxford Street. 

"If you saw anything or captured footage on dash cam as you drove past the area we would also like to hear from you."

Police officers remain on the scene at De Montfort University in Leicester, where a student has been fatally stabbed. 

Parts of the university campus and the surrounding streets were closed off as police commence a murder investigation.

The university's Innovation Centre, located on the corner of Oxford Street, Bonners Lane and Grange Lane was cordoned off on Wednesday morning. 

The De Montfort University student who died in the stabbing collapsed on Oxford Street, police said.

University confirms 'devastating' death of student

Katie Normington, vice-chancellor of De Montfort University, has confirmed that the man who died in the stabbing was a student. 

"We are devastated to confirm the tragic death of one of our students," she said. 

"Our thoughts are with everyone who is affected by what has happened. 

"We are offering direct support to students, staff and the family of the victim.  

"We are working with Leicestershire Police as they investigate this major incident. 

"Thank you for the messages of support we have been receiving from the community of Leicester: it is a city that knows how to stand together in moments like this."  

Investigators are 'piecing together' what happened, lead detective says

Detective Inspector Lorna Granville, who is the senior investigating officer on the Leicester stabbing, says police are hard at work on finding out what happened.

"We are currently piecing together exactly what has occurred on the corner of Oxford Street and Bonners Lane between, what is reported, as two men involved in a confrontation," she said.

"One of the men is believed to have been stabbed and has then collapsed in the street. 

"Despite the best efforts of medical staff he died in hospital.

"CCTV in the area is currently being reviewed and officers are speaking to potential witnesses to assist with our investigation."

Victim of deadly Leicester stabbing was man in his 20s - who had 'altercation' with other man

A man in his 20s died after being stabbed in Leicester city centre, police have said as they provided more details about the murder investigation.

Leicestershire Police said the man was stabbed following an altercation with another man on Tuesday. That man left the scene before the police arrived.

The victim collapsed in Oxford Street, near the junction with Bonners Lane. Police were called just after 5pm.

He was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary, where he died a short time later.

Murder investigation under way as 18-year-old arrested

Police say an 18-year-old man has been arrested after a stabbing near De Montfort University.

Leicestershire Police have confirmed a murder investigation is under way in a statement published on X.

"A murder investigation is under way after a man is believed to have been stabbed close to Leicester city centre," the force said. 

"The incident happened around 5pm in Oxford Street. 

"An 18-year-old man has been arrested."

'This was not a mass stabbing', police tell member of public on X

Leicestershire Police have ruled out that an incident at the De Montfort University campus was a "mass stabbing".

In response to speculation about the nature of the incident, the force said in reply to a member of the public on X:

"Speculation is unhelpful, but we can confirm that this was not a mass stabbing. 

"Further details will be published shortly on our website and social media channels."
