Britain's Johanna Konta has been knocked out of Wimbledon by Venus Williams in the women's singles semi-finals.

She was the only hope of home glory after Andy Murray's knockout yesterday.

Konta lost the match 4-6, 2-6 having made history by progressing so far in the competition. She is the first British woman to reach the top four in almost 40 years.

Konta wrote in a post on Twitter after the match: "Thank you to everyone for the love and support over these past 2 weeks."

Williams paid tribute to her opponent after the match, saying Konta "handled the pressure".

"I've played a lot of finals here," she said. "One more win will be amazing. It won't be a given but I'll give it my all.
