Race to save whales after mass stranding
Saturday 11 February 2017 15:20, UK
New Zealand

More than 400 whales have been found stranded on a New Zealand beach
Image:
Most of the pilot whales were dead by the time they were spotted on Friday morning
Image:
The whales were discovered in Golden Bay, the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island
Image:
But volunteers are hoping about 100 of the pilot whales can be saved
Image:
On Saturday, however, another pod of about 240 whales stranded itself in the same spot
Image:
Volunteers continue to try to save the stranded animals and hope to refloat them on the next high tide
Image:
An urgent plea has gone out for more volunteers to join the hundreds already at the scene
Image:
It is one of the country's largest recorded mass whale strandings

The precise cause of the stranding is not known
